Citing Secondary Sources Properly (Harvard, APA, OSCOLA)

Cited in vs as cited in vs original source - UK examiners are strict on this, and most students get it wrong.

A secondary citation is when you cite Author A, but you only ever read Author B's discussion of Author A. UK markers expect you to flag this honestly.

How to do it

Harvard in-text: (Smith, 1990, cited in Jones, 2024). Only Jones goes in the reference list. APA: (Smith, 1990, as cited in Jones, 2024). OSCOLA: footnote both with 'cited in'. Whenever possible, find and read the original - examiners can tell when you haven't.
